Over a discussion this weekend, I was reminded of my complete abandonment of Google Reader. For quite a while, this RSS aggregator was my preferred content curator. I could track the blogs I wanted, sift through them quickly, and share and save my favorites.
What I’ve noticed over time is that I’ve replaced Reader with Twitter. Even though I’ve used both services together for the last few years, as Twitter has grown I’ve adopted it as my go-to source. Leveraging ‘lists’ grants me access to different content topics based on who I follow.
Even though this is based off of my own behavior, it’s evidence in my own mind for how social networks will continue to evolve as our preferred curation resource. It’s just more relevant to the user. Your friends online share more common interests and behaviors than you do with media companies.
This is not a new concept but interesting to discover how my own behavior has already shifted. It will be fun to watch how this plays out with the broader public over time.
